Caring For The Caregivers
Too often, family caregivers, those not in the medical profession, get lost in the shuffle and even forgotten after the commotion of medical emergencies and procedures have abated. Sometimes, even close friends begin to pull away and stop calling. The caregiver is often alone, with no support structure in place. Burnout becomes real, but not always noticed by either the caregiver or their friends, when its clutches arise. Try as they might to remain strong, caregivers often can’t avoid the effects of burnout, which often manifest itself in some or all of the following ways:
- Feelings of helplessness
- Increase in use of stimulants and alcohol
To be a truly effective caregivers, we must be aware of our own limitations. We must first learn to take care of ourselves just as well as we are taking care of others.
We’ve assembled lists of support groups in the local Southern California area, as well as some on-line groups that can be useful to the caregiver, and to those who in turn support and care for the caregiver themselves.
